St. Valentines Day

St Valentine’s Day around the world

St Valentine’s day or as it is more popularly known nowadays, Valentine’s Day is a day when most countries celebrate love. I have come across people who do not believe in the day because they are of the opinion that love should be celebrated every other day.

True, but how many people actually celebrate love with such exuberance on ordinary days of the year?

So if for one day lovers can go all out to declare their love for each other and be purposeful about it, I say bring on Valentine’s Day.

Different countries have customised their Valentine’s Day traditions and I chose a few interesting ones to write about

In Brazil they celebrate what is called Dia dos Namorados which means “Day of the Enamoured” on June 12. They celebrate it a day before Saint Anthony’s Day. Saint Anthony was a marriage saint.

In Japan, on the February 14, the women buy the men chocolate. If it is a platonic relationship or the man is a close relative the women buy a chocolate called “kiri-choco”. If the man is a boyfriend, husband or lover a different chocolate is bought, namely “hon-mei”

A month later on March 14 the men reciprocate the affection by buying any woman who remembered them on Valentine’s Day a white chocolate. The day is called “White Day” because of the white chocolate.

The French are like most countries and also exchange Valentine’s gifts, mostly flowers and chocolates. They express love to all those close to them and not just their lovers.

In the Middle Ages it was a common belief that birds began to mate half way through the second month of the year.
Everyone gets involved in Scotland The Scottish Valentine’s Day celebrations are my favourite. This day involves everyone in Scotland.

The children make cards and write poems on them. The grown-ups exchange cards and or gifts with their loved ones and close relatives.

However the cards are sent anonymously. They enthusiastically wait for the postman to deliver their cards.
They also write messages on the envelopes to encourage speedy delivery of the mail. In Scottish custom the first young man or woman one encounters in the street or anywhere else becomes their Valentine for the day.

In the evening men and women gather for games at Valentine’s parties. One of the popular games involves an equal number of men’s names and an equal number of women’s names being placed in separate hats.
A woman picks a name from the men’s hat and that becomes her date for the entire evening. These kinds of games have been known to result in unusual marriages.

The Indians were hesitant to celebrate Valentine’s Day as they believed it was a Western import and was not relevant to their culture.

However, the youth of the country are now celebrating Valentine’s Day. They too exchange the typical Valentine’s flowers, gifts and cards.

As in most countries that celebrate the day, a lot of marketing goes into the day with stores and media creating a buzz about the day.

Like the Indians, the Italians also believed Valentine’s Day to be a Western import and they celebrated their own day known as Il giorno della festa degli innamora.
This day is primarily for lovers, so platonic friends as well as family could not participate in the day by exchanging gifts
Recently, Italian lovers have begun to express love to each other through the exchange of gifts and other Valentine’s paraphernalia and going out to dinner at their ristorantes and pizzerias.

They also have a tradition that encourages the exchange of diamonds, roses and perfume, depending on the age and preferences of the person receiving the gifts.
Zimbabwe’s celebration of love heavily influenced by the West
Last but not least, we look at how we celebrate Valentine’s Day in Zimbabwe. Restaurants and hotels have Valentine’s Day specials. The dinner costs more than it could on the average day. Meals now go for twice as much with promise of something more special.

The gift shops have had hearts and teddies in their display windows well in advance. Red roses are on the increase .
Florists definitely look forward to the increase of business with deliveries of flowers to various men and women around the cities.

When I was in high school Valentine’s Day was something the school celebrated together. Being an all girls’ school the arrival of boys with large bouquets of flowers, teddy bears with hearts that had the inscription “I love you”, chocolate, single red roses and cards created a buzz among the ladies.

If you had a boyfriend it was obvious one of those gifts was yours, if you did not you at least hoped you had an admirer so you would not feel left out.

All the cards were read out in front of the whole school. Oh, the days of young, innocent, uncomplicated love. We would also send our gifts to the different boys’ schools in Harare.

Zimbabwe is influenced a lot by Western culture so we celebrate in similar manner to the United States.

The high schools also host Valentine’s Balls or dances. Maybe it is about time we seriously considered personalising our Valentine’s Day.

All In God's Glory Beautiful Churches!

I find that Churchs are one of my loves, I love the architure of the buildings, the glory that surrounds them, But I have to emphasis, they are only buildings and GOD is not just in those buildings!! He is everywhere! I thought I would share some great photos of Churches I have found! Hope you enjoy!

or Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Храм Спаса на Крови)

Built 1883-1907 on the spot where Alexander II was assassinated.

Orthodox Church of Tornio

In 1825 Russian Czar Alexander I made the decision to found and construct a military church in Finland, in Tornio. The present little church building is from 1884 and it is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul. It is part of the orthodox parish of Oulu. The church is situated in the centre of Tornio near the Swedish border.

Kyiv-Pecherska Lavra, Ukraine

Borgund Church : Best Preserved Stave Church

The Borgund Stave Church in Lrdal is the best preserved of Norway ‘s 28 extant stave churches. This wooden church, probably built in the end of the 12th century, has not changed structure or had a major reconstruction since the date it was built. The church is also featured as a Wonder for the Viking civilization in the video game Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.

St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow

The St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the Red Square in Moscow , Russia . A Russian Orthodox church, the Cathedral sports a series of colorful bulbous domes that taper to a point, aptly named onion domes, that are part of Moscow ‘s Kremlin skyline. The cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of the Khanate of Kazan. In 1588 Tsar Fedor Ivanovich had a chapel added on the eastern side above the grave of Basil Fool for Christ, a Russian Orthodox saint after whom the cathedral was popularly named.

MK–Troy, MI

This is the church in Camoapa, Boaco. This is in the beautiful country of Nicaragua.

Las Lajas Cathedral : A Gothic Church Worthy of a Fairy Tale

The Las Lajas Cathedral is located in southern Colombia and built in 1916 inside the canyon of the Guaitara River . According to the legend, this was the place where an Indian woman named Mara Mueses de Quiones was carrying her deaf-mute daughter Rosa on her back near Las Lajas (“The Rocks”). Weary of the climb, the Mara sat down on a rock when Rosa spoke (for the first time) about an apparition in a cave. Later on, a mysterious painting of the Virgin Mary carrying a baby was discovered on the wall of the cave. Supposedly, studies of the painting showed no proof of paint or pigments on the rock – instead, when a core sample was taken, it was found that the colors were impregnated in the rock itself to a depth of several feet. Whether true or not, the legend spurred the building of this amazing church.

Chapel of St-Gildas : Built into the base of a bare rocky cliff

The Chapel of St-Gildas sits upon the bank of the Canal du Blavet in Brittany, France . Built like a stone barn into the base of a bare rocky cliff, this was once a holy place of the Druids. Gildas appears to have travelled widely throughout the Celtic world of Corwall, Wales , Ireland and Scotland . He arrived in Brittany in about AD 540 and is said to have preached Christianity to the people from a rough pulpit, now contained within the chapel.

Jesus is the Reason for Every Season

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

When you are a small child, Christmas is such a huge deal to you, Santa Clause, Presents, Tv Shows and more. There are so many thing associated with Christmas that can take your mind and heart off the real reason for Christmas! The commericalism of "Christmas" has made us lose the Real Reason for Christmas, The Birth of Jesus Christ!

Have you stopped and thought about that, it's not the presents, shopping, and more. It's about the celebration of Jesus Christ and what he means to you and your family.

So many today doesn't want to offend! So they use Happy Holidays,

Instead of Merry Christmas!

Well from me, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!! Not just on December 25th, but all year through!

We should celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ Everyday, Thank you God for your sacrifice!

John 3:16, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that those who believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

It is with “goodwill toward men” that the Christian lives each day of His life. Instead of being particularly generous on a seasonal basis we ought to, by faith, be more generous every day. “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.” (Galatians 6:10).

So why not start a new tradition, a daily tradition of Celebrating Jesus, not just on Christmas Day,

He tells us that everyday we ought to be reminding others of the Lord, and encouraging them to live faithfully; “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called 'Today,' so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:13).

I am a Waldorf handwork and crafts teacher, doll artist and art therapist. I teach sewing, knitting, needle felting, weaving, wet felting and wool painting, using soft, natural materials in my creations. I recently discovered a love for buttons and started to use them in my work as well as selling them. (See my second Etsy shop.)

I used to teach at Waldorf schools and at the seminar for training Waldorf teachers in Jerusalem. I recently opened a private school where I work with young teachers, children, mothers and grandmothers.

As a teacher, I believe I have to be the example of how to create so I practice with making every single item I teach. In this way, teaching and creating handwork and crafts in the Waldorf tradition are both my inner development and my occupation too. I have taught for over 30 years now and needed a change. So, I started my first e-shop as a hobby, as a way to study new skills [computer and English]. I was amazed to see that people liked what I created! It encouraged me to go on with it- and here we are... Now I am a seller, too. You never know what tomorrow will bring or where your destiny will lead you.

Artist's statement: I believe Waldorf dolls provide healing forces for the child. The love and warmth which is involved in the creation of these kinds of dolls streams to the doll in the process of creating and the child can feel it. I can tell you from my experience that hyperactive children who did not sleep well began to sleep all night when their mothers created a Waldorf doll for them. Also, the process of creating these dolls is therapeutic for the adults, as it is a process that requires forces from the soul which are different from any other creation I know... It calls the creator to be in touch more deeply with their own inner powers.

I have been working with wood for a number of years. I love wood and all of its associations from the leaves on the trees to the birds that nest amongst them. What would we do and where would we be without them?The timber for all of the items that I make comes from storm damaged, salvaged or second use items. If I have to buy any timber then I assure myself first that it originates from properly managed forests and sources.My love of timber first started when I was in the Navy and in my spare time made miniature furniture - dolls house size. After leaving the navy joinery and cabinet making furthered my infatuation. Later, wood carving took up most of my time and now I spend more hours making smaller items such as jewelery and crosses out of wood sometimes embellishing the items with semi - precious stones.

I hope that you enjoy looking at the items that I have made and that you may be reassured that they are all made with love.

My mother taught me to sew as a little girl and in 1998 I started quilting. I have won an Honorable Mention ribbon in our local quilt show for large sized quilts using mixed techniques. I have had a variety of training including some college level classes in design, 2-D and 3-D techniques. Quilting is my media of choice. My work has been displayed in several local quilt shows and fabric shops.
I make much, much, much more than what is listed in my etsy shop...I make wall hangings, full sized quilts, baby quilts, raggy totes or diaper bags, matching raggy mother daughter purses with coordinating raggy baby blankets, personalized pillowcases, name wall hangings for nurseries, playrooms and bedrooms...
